History of Birsa Munda
Over time, this British rule spread to those remote parts as well, where the residents were completely unfamiliar with this type of civilisation, culture and tradition. Among the tribals, the British rulers started imposing the burden of revenue on them by declaring their chieftains as zamindars. Apart from this, such a convoy of moneylenders, traders and tax collectors entered the entire tribal area, who used to broker the British power by their character
Such middlemen, who were called Munda Diku (robbers), with the help of the British system, started destroying the collective farming of Munda tribals and rapidly started grabbing their lands. Engaging the Mundas in all the legal and illegal clutches, taking advantage of their innocence, they were successful in bringing them to a slave-like position. Although the Munda Sardars continued to struggle against this situation for 30 years, but the great hero Birsa Munda, born in 1875, gave a new height to this struggle.
Birsa Munda's struggle against injustice
The tribal society was burning in the furnace of exploitation of Indian landlords and vassals and British rulers. Disappointed by the declining standard of living of the Munda people, Birsa was always concerned for their upliftment and dignified life. In 1895 Birsa Munda declared that he was sent by God to earth to do a noble cause. So that he fights against the oppressors and gets the Mundas back their forest-lands and once established Munda rule over all the parganas of Chota Nagpur. On this call of Birsa Munda, the tribals of the entire area started coming to see him as a god. Birsa was successful in setting up a political military organization of Mundas by giving religious-political discourses in the tribal villages. Birsa Munda laid the foundation of a movement to give a befitting reply to the tendency of British bureaucracy and surprise attack.
Birsa's movement against the British Empire
In 1895, Birsa waged a battle for jungle land with the British enforced zamindar system and revenue system. He also declared war against usury moneylenders. It was not only a rebellion but also a fight to save the identity and culture. Birsa took up arms against the British because the tribals were crushed from both sides. On one side there was deprivation and poverty and on the other side the Indian Forest Act 1882, due to which only the claimants of the forest were being evicted from the forest. Birsa started social, economic, political protest for this and carried out guerrilla warfare.
On October 1, 1894, Birsa launched a movement against the British. Birsa Munda was truly the Eklavya of the era on the ground of might and social awakening. The British government, considering it a sign of danger, arrested Birsa Munda and put him in the Hazaribagh Central Jail in 1895 for two years.
